How to Make Irresistible Creamy Easy Stovetop Mac and Cheese
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, then add elbow macaroni. Cook for about 7-9 minutes until al dente, then drain and save some pasta water for later.
- In the same pot, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour to create a smooth paste; cook for 1 minute until it’s bubbly and pale.
- Gradually whisk in milk while stirring continuously for about 3-5 minutes, until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
- Slowly add shredded cheddar cheese to the pot, stirring until it’s fully melted and the sauce is smooth and creamy.
- Fold the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce. If it feels too thick, add reserved pasta water a tablespoon at a time to achieve the perfect consistency.
- Taste and adjust salt and pepper as desired. Serve hot directly from the pot or transfer to bowls for a cozy family meal.
Notes
For extra flavor, sprinkle with additional cheese or herbs before serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
